Ephod is a word you don’t normally see today and it is one of the most important things in the Bible when it comes to honourary and ceremony. It is recorded that King David wore a linen ephod when he danced before God when the ark of God was carried from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David.

There are several times in the Bible when the word was mentioned. Exodus 28:6-8 speaks clearly about what Ephod is;

“And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and of fine twined linen, skillfully worked. It shall have two shoulder pieces attached to its two edges, so that it may be joined together. And the skillfully woven band on it shall be made like it and be of one piece with it, of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen.”

What Is Ephod In The Old Testament?

There are basically two meanings for the word ‘Ephod’. What most people understand is its relation to any item to be worn or garment. An example is in Leviticus and Exodus, God prescribed to Moses.

This includes how to cleanse himself with water and what to wear. It is factually included among a litany of clean garments Aaron wore. Some of the items are a breastpiece, robe, woven tunic, turban, and sash (Exodus 28:4).

As He specifies, the ephod should be made “of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen—the work of skilled hands. It is to have two shoulder pieces attached to two of its corners, so it can be fastened. Its skillfully woven waistband is to be like it—of one piece with the ephod and made with gold, and with blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and with finely twisted linen” (Exodus 28:6-8 NIV).

Why Is the Ephod Important?

Adam and Eve communicated freely with God while they were in the Garden of Eden. Since they were banished, our communication with Him has been fractured. It has changed everything between us and our God. We can actually trace the break of communication. Paul Tripp explained here;

“Words that challenge God’s authority, lies, false interpretations of life, accusations and blame against God and man all have their origin in this dramatic moment of change. Satan speaks, and as Adam and Eve act upon his words, the world of talk becomes a world of trouble. No longer do we simply reflect the image of God with our words; we also reflect the image of the Serpent. No longer do we consistently speak up to God’s standard; we often speak down to the Serpent’s. No longer are our words a faithful picture of God’s design; too often they picture Satan’s deceit. Talk is no longer easy or safe. Instead, we live in a world where lies manipulate, angry words wound, falsehood destroys, slander harms, condemnation tears down, and disrespectful words challenge the authorities God has set in place” (Tripp, 25).

What Is The Purpose Of The Ephod?

Ephod was sacred clothing or garment worn by the high priests. God instructed them not to wear ordinary clothing during their service to Him but they should have holy clothing made by those whom He had “filled with the spirit of wisdom” (Exodus 28:2–3). The sacred clothing was meant to pass from father to son (Exodus 29:29.)
